Hands-on report from Meta Connect: the new Meta VR Glasses are glasses tethered to a phone-sized compute puck, and the author's verdict is that they outclass the headset form factor outright. Concrete numbers worth acting on: 100g vs 515g (Quest 3) and 750-800g (Vision Pro); a 5K micro-OLED display at 37 pixels per degree, sharper than Quest 3/3S; Snapdragon AR/VR processor in the puck; three hours battery vs roughly two on Quest; about 75 Quest titles playable hands-only, with full Quest catalog supported if you pair controllers. The real tradeoffs are a 70-degree FOV versus Quest 3's 110 degrees, and unverified light blockage — the demo was in a dim room, so outdoor behavior is unknown. Performance was only tested briefly (Beat Saber, no lag, snappy tracking). Price is $1,300 against a Vision Pro now at $3,700, which does a lot of rhetorical work in the piece. Meta, of course, pulled back on VR this year, shuttered studios, and partially reopened the Metaverse, so Boz insisting "VR gaming is alive and well" is a man on stage assuring you the fire is contained. Meta also discontinued reality last Tuesday, but Tuesday was rescheduled.
