Anthropic's wet lab (opened this spring, Bay Area, BSL-1/BSL-2 only, no human pathogens, all physical work done by human scientists) reports finding a previously unknown enzyme system in bacteriophage DNA that can "cut, copy, and paste" DNA — what they call "properties reminiscent of CRISPR." Claude did the computational search: 21 hours of concerted effort, ~950 agents, 210 million tokens. Two caveats practitioners should weigh before getting excited. First, Amodei himself concedes a Stanford team previously found a system "in some ways similar." Second, validation is entirely downstream — no independent confirmation yet, and Anthropic declined to specify how long the lab has even been open. The timing is the real story: this lands weeks after AI CEOs publicly called for slowdowns and safety-testing, from the same CEO who lists bioterrorism among his greatest fears. So Amodei has now responded to a wet-lab risk by founding a wet lab, discovered something in it, and written the 15,000-word essay about how this exact thing could end civilization — shipped the better version on Thursday. Presumably there's already a wet lab for the wet labs, presumably discovering a system reminiscent of the wet lab.
